Workshop: Boundaries and Self Advocacy for Young Actors

After some journaling time, Students will be given a quick, and age appropriate explanation of the Yes-To-No Spectrum. This spectrum is an incredible compass for navigating decision making, and was created by my mentor Mia Schachter.

The workshop ends with activities that allow students the opportunity to feel a “Yes” and “No” in their body.

Here you can access my Workshop “Boundary Setting & Self Advocacy for Young Actors”, along with a teacher’s guide.

This workshop is intended for teachers or camp counselors to facilitate with their students.

“Boundary Setting and Self Advocacy for Young Actors”, was created to help actors ages 13 to 17 learn to advocate for themselves on and off stage and set.

Students begin this workshop by learning about boundaries, body sensations, and their relationship to decision making. Next, the instructor leads students through a progression of activities, which gives them opportunities to access their own body sensations.

What Teacher’s are saying about the exercises in “Boundary and Self Advocacy for Young Actors”,

"The students liked being silly, and most classes led into a discussion on when expectations for a situation don’t line up, we can feel tricked or cheated and unsafe but it doesn’t mean the other person was intending to make us feel that way.”

In an early class, one student asked the partner if he could pour water on her and she said yes. They both reached for their own water-bottles and then realized they had different interpretations of what was going to happen. The asker thought he would empty his water bottle on his partner’s head and she thought he would pour water from HER water bottle on her arm and it would just be a few drops. They both reached for their own water-bottles and then stopped. It led into a really great discussion about how our life experiences are different and things that can feel “so obvious” to us, are not as obvious to others”
